I currently have an interesting class full of very
bouncy, noisy boys. Over Easter I planned lots of, what I thought were, great
units of work for the term, with lessons I know would have had my previous year
3/4 classes engaged and enthusiastic. However after only four 'interesting'
days back at school I have realised that for this class I need to take
practical one step further. We just aren’t a sit down and do it kind of class.
So I'm planning more outdoor learning and have been thinking of ways to grab their
attention.
On the way home from work the other day the song
'Money on my mind' by Sam Smith came on the radio. Whilst singing along I
realised how similar the words money and magnets sounded. Odd I know, but stick
with me. This planted the seed and today I took a look at the original lyrics
and composed my own based on our science topic - magnets and springs (although
I just focused on magnets for the song).
Here is my first draft are the original and new lyrics
side by side:

I will probably use the original track to sing over when we are learning
it so we know when to sing and don’t get too fast. But if it gets too confusing
with different words then I will go straight to using the backing track (which
I also brought from iTunes, search money on my mind karaoke and you will see a
range of tracks come up, if you have vocals make sure you pick the one without
the backing vocal 'money on my mind' as that will confuse).
I have heard of other teachers matching new lyrics to popular
songs with their class but isn’t something I've tried before. I'm quite pleased
with the result.
